I went out fishing yesterday in a friends 19' Key West out of Alligator Point (big bend Florida)6:30am temperature was 49. It was a little windier than I was hoping but for some reason there was only light chop no waves. I caught a red on a top-water and he shook loose at the boat, but I looked out on the gulf and saw flocks of birds tightly bound diving in 3 groups so I put a 5" gold spoon and headed out first cast in the school of crashing fish caught a 36" tarpon but drifted away from birds so put the spoon out an trolled by the group at 5mph and caught a nice Spanish Mackerel. I did this many more time with similar result I caught 12fish all good size but only kept 4 because that was all I needed and it doesn't taste good after being frozen. Didn't have camera on a the boat sorry but here is back at my house:
WOW!! That sounds like fun... it is awsome to see birds working bait .. because you know the fish are there.. glad to here that you caught a tarpon...would love to catch one of those.. do you ever try to catch those inshore groupers... i would really like to try that..
Sure do I go after inshore gags the legal size is 22" most of the time you can get 2 nice 25-30inchers in about 20 minutes in the 20-25 foot range in rock piles. Was going out to do that yesterday but got hung up on the birds and bait school I was only fishing for 1 hour and had to leave to go to class but might go back on Thursday and will post any fish I get then.
dude !! i bet that is a blast.. do you catch them on lures or bait.. would love to see pics.. enter one of them GAGS the fisibook photo contest THAT WOULD GREAT...
Both Pinfish, fingermullet, or pilchards and jigs. I use either 3oz bucktail grouper jig or will troll them with a larger 6oz jig. I will do my best to get a good one for the photo contest.
